The R6G hypochlorite probe has high selectivity and sensitivity to ClO- ions (detection limit 25nM). When the water sample contains ClO- ions, the R6G hypochlorite probe reacts with the ClO- ions to undergo a ring-opening hydrolysis reaction, generating product 2 that emits 547nm emission light under 500nm excitation light. The fluorescence intensity is proportional to the product, so the detected fluorescence intensity can be used to detect the content of ClO- ions in the water sample. Moreover, bioimaging shows that the probe can detect ClO- ions in cells.
